Brain & Breathing

Biomedical Platform

We explore the neural control of breathing using state-of-the-art neuroscience and physiology tools. Our platform combines optogenetics, neurophysiology, pharmacology, transgenics, neuro-imaging to better understand the neural networks regulating breathing.

We use cre-lox recombination approaches to insert or remove genes in specific populations of cells in mice. Using these mice, we can address the mechanisms mediating regulating respiratory depression by opioids and the neural control of breathing.

We currently use the following transgenic lines, mostly with C57BL/6 background. Please contact us if you would like to collaborate or have access to these lines:

  • Tachykinin-cre. Tac1-IRES2-Cre-D (Jackson Labs #021877)
  • Somatostatin-cre. Ssttm2.1(cre)Zjh (Jackson Labs #013044)
  • Oprm1-flox. B6;129-Oprm1tm1.1Cgrf/KffJ (Jackson Labs #030074)
  • Vglut2-cre. STOCK Slc17a6tm2(cre)Lowl/J (Jackson Labs # 016963)
