To accelerate drug discovery, we use high-throughput gene and drug screening platforms in zebrafish models of respiratory depression and analgesia. By using larval zebrafish, an animal model preserving the complex behaviors of vertebrates while allowing large-scale drug screening, we screen chemical library and identify effective pain killers without the side-effects of respiratory depression.
Our ultimate goal is to find safe opioid pain killers or countermeasures to opioid analgesics can be safely prescribed.
